HGST has announced additional solid-state drives (SSDs) for the data centre, offering a spread of price and performance options for customers that balance write endurance, write performance and cost, with capacities up to 1.6TB.

Available now, the new high-performance Ultrastar 12Gbps serial attached SCSI (SAS) SSDfamily supports applications requiring fast and reliable data storage, such as onlinetransaction processing, cloud computing, online gaming and big data analytics, the firm said.

The new Ultrastar SSD800MH.B, Ultrastar SSD1600MM, and Ultrastar SSD1600MR SSDs are designed for server and storage systems running today’s performance-sensitive enterprise applications and are capable of boasting sequential throughput up to 1100MB/s read and 765MB/s write as well as up to 130,000 read and 110,000 write IOPS.

HGST does not believe SSDs will replace HDDs anytime soon but more that a mixture of disk types will be used in enterprise storage to form tiered storage depending on the strengths and cost of ownership of each type.
