Here is HGST's latest effort to provide the next step up in storage capcaity for enterprises facing ever increasing data volumes. This is the Ultrastar Helium Platform (He6) hard drive family, currently only offering 6TB capacity but HGST do have plans to release bigger capacities in the near future.

They offer them with either SATA or SAS 6Gb/s interfaces and have a rotational speed of 7200RPM. The main technology part of these drives though are of course that they are sealed, with helium inside to reduce friction. The reduced friction means HGST can pack more platters into the 3.5" hard drive form factor. They are using 7 platters here, compared to four or five in most other 4TB drives today. The less friction also means lower power consumption and cooler running tempatures. 23% less at idle and 4 degree's cooler going by HGST measurements.

The bottom line is these offer a hefty 50% gain over today's leading 4TB capacity drives and would be upto two to three times the storage density in the same rack with lower capcity drives. Which will allow you (our customers) to create much higher density data centers. If you can deal with the slightly higher price premium, then these HGST helium drives are a sure fire way to save on rack space, power and heat.
