While the 3.5" enterprise form factor continues to offer higher and higher capactiies, soon to reach upto 10TB, the 2.5" form factor is also steadily growing in capacity sizes. SSDs are unquestionably penetrating further into the performance 2.5" segment. While SSDs are coming in larger capacities as of late, 2TB capacity points have not become pervasive, and overall NAND production is close but not available just yet. Another advantage for the Enterprise Capacity v3 lies in its High Availability features delivered via 6GB/s SATA or 12Gb/s SAS connections.

One of the primary reasons for the surge in SSD adoption is fierce competition between foundries, leading to more palatable price points for consumers, but many of the value segment SSDs continue to feature the SATA connection. SAS SSDs also have value options, but they command a higher price point, which leads plenty of room for higher-capacity SAS HDDs in the datacenter. Offering 2TB in a small form factor also opens up more opportunities in dense system designs, and incorporates well into slim 1U and 2U servers.

Seagate ST2000NX0253Toshiba MQ03ABB300          

Toshiba unveiled a new 3TB hard disk drive that's crammed into a 2.5-inch form factor. The MQ03ABB300 is the smallest such hard disk drive and kickstarts another potential round of product launches. Samsung Storage, now a Seagate division, produces a 3-platter, 2TB 5400 RPM drive while Seagate has an enterprise-focused Constellation drive spinning at 7200RPM. WD has a 4-platter 2TB model and HGST Ultrastart topped 1.8TB. The drive uses perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and uses four 750GB platters to achieve this capacity. Expect this particular model to be a 15mm model like its predecessor with 8MB buffer and a 5400RPM. This drive will be available at the end of August 2015.
