Delivering the highest performance and efficiency of any 2U 4-node design, the Supermicro BigTwin system supports the full range of Intel Xeon Scalable processors.

Depending on the configuration, each node features dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors (up to 28 cores, 205W TDP per CPU, 3 UPI), 24 DIMMs for up to 3TB of DDR4-2666MHz registered ECC memory, up to six hot-swap NVMe or SAS3 drives, up to three PCI-E 3.0 slots including support for a flexible SIOM module enabling 100/50/40/25/10G networking options and redundant 2600W/2200W Titanium Level (96%+) digital power supplies.



The BigTwin fully exploits all the memory channels. That allows for up to 12 DDR4 RDIMMs per CPU or 24 per node. Older generations of 2U 4-node systems had either 1 DIMM per channel (8 per node) or 2 DIMM per channel designs (16 per node). With 24 DIMM slots per node you can have up to  3TB of DDR4-2666MHz registered ECC memory per node.

Expansion options are plentiful in this chassis. There is a gold SATA DOM slot that allows for SATA DOM installation without a power cable.

2U 4-node designs with only one or two PCIe x8 slots cannot handle enough 100GbE / EDR InfiniBand/ Omni-Path fabric I/O to effectively get data onto the network from the six NVMe drives.

Under the second riser is an SIOM slot. That is Supermicro’s proprietary network slot. As of now, the highest speed options are an Omni-Path 100Gbps SIOM or a 2x 25GbE (SFP28) and 2x 10Gbase-T module. Our test server was equipped with a pedestrian dual 1GbE SIOM so we added our 40GbE adapters via add-on cards.

The rear of the chassis features power supplies in the middle with two nodes on either side. These skinny PSUs are capable of 2.2kW of output making them slender powerhouses.

Supermicro’s high-density all-flash NVMe 1U SuperServer 1029UZ-TN20R25M provides the high-end performance required for the most demanding cloud computing applications. 

With support for twenty hot-swap NVMe drives, this system comes standard with dual 25G Ethernet ports and supports the full range of dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 3TB of DDR4-2666MHz memory in 24 DIMMs, up to two PCI-E 3.0 expansion slots and redundant 1600W Titanium Level (96%+) digital power supplies.

There are a total of two PCIe x16 slots. In the NVMe chassis this is important since with 6x NVMe SSDs there are 24x PCIe lanes dedicated to storage I/O.
